Investigations performed & interpreted on the day

Melbourne Heart Clinic for Kids is staffed by experienced specialist paediatric cardiologists and dedicated technologists — providing outstanding care without waiting periods.

Electrocardiogram

ECG

A few minutes Painless

An ECG is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart. It is taken by placing small sticky probes on the chest, arms and legs of your child.

It is not painful, but your child needs to keep still for a few minutes while the recording is taken.

Echocardiogram

Echo

Up to one hour Painless

An echocardiography machine uses sound waves to create a moving picture of your child's heart. A trained and accredited sonographer will perform the echo.

An instrument (echo probe) that transmits and receives sound waves is placed in various positions on your child's chest. It is performed in a semi-dark, quiet room, does not cause any pain, and your child is simply required to lie still.

Holter Monitor

Holter

1–2 days at home Painless

A Holter Monitor is a small wearable device that keeps a recording of your child's heart rhythm. It records the electrical activity with three small sticky probes on the chest.

Your child wears the device for one or two days and it records every heartbeat during that time. Your child can continue their normal daily activities while wearing the monitor — apart from bathing or showering.

† The right investigations for your child are decided with your cardiologist. Not every child needs every test.

Fees & Medicare

Clear, upfront and simple

We’re a private clinic. Here’s what to expect around payment and rebates — and you’re always welcome to ask us beforehand.

Payment on the day

For all clinic services we require full payment on the day of the test. You can ask about the cost of your visit, test or procedure when booking — we'll give you a guide to your likely out-of-pocket cost.

How to pay

We accept credit card and provide EFTPOS facilities, and ask that accounts are settled in full on the day of consultation.

Medicare claims

We lodge Medicare claims electronically, so your Medicare rebate is sent automatically to your nominated bank account.

Referrals & rebates

A valid referral is required for a Medicare rebate. GP referrals are valid for 12 months; specialist referrals for 3 months. Without a current referral, only a small portion of the rebate is payable.

Ready to take the next step for your child’s heart?

Ask your GP or specialist for a referral, or get in touch with our reception team — most new patients are seen without a long wait.
